Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for two tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, effective July 1, 2024, subject to final budgetary approval. 

Qualifications and Key Areas of Interest

Candidates must hold a J.D. or LL.B. degree as well as either an LL.M. or a Master’s degree in a closely-related field. Preference will be given to those with either a doctoral degree in law, a Ph.D. in a closely-related field, or who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion.  Although we will consider scholars with research and teaching expertise in other areas, our school is particularly interested in attracting scholars with expertise in Aboriginal and Indigenous law, Civil Procedure, Legal Research and Writing, Corporate/Commercial law, Tax law, and Poverty law. We are also interested in attracting scholars with varied, novel and/or newly developing theoretical perspectives and/or methodological approaches to the study of law; scholars with expertise in progressive and democratic reform of legal education; as well as scholars with other areas or modes of expertise relating to law’s construction of, and/or potential to remedy, some of the unique socio-economic challenges faced by members of our School’s expansive, racially diverse, and economically polarized urban environment. Candidates are asked to indicate in their cover letter their primary teaching and research interests. 

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:

  • a research agenda that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;
  • experience with or capacity/potential for high-quality teaching and student engagement; 
  • strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise students;
  • a commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and 
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Law School and the University through collegial service. With the School’s rapid growth in years to come, contributions to service and administration are valued and thus we look for candidates with the interest and capacity to contribute in this manner.

Lincoln Alexander School of Law

Responsibilities include: contributing to our Juris Doctor program through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students; participating in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, community-engaged research agenda, including pursuing innovative, independent research that produces cutting-edge high quality results; and participating in the academic life of the Law School and the University.
