Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a Limited Term Faculty (LTF) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of construction engineering and management and/or a related area in civil engineering. The appointment shall be effective August 1, 2024 for a one-year term and subject to final budgetary approval. 

The successful candidate will only be required to engage in the teaching and service duties expected of faculty members in the Department, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across such activities. The successful candidate is expected to teach five regular courses as a normal load in the Fall and Winter semesters. The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate (MEng, MASc and PhD) programs. Specifically, the successful candidate must have the ability to teach at a minimum (i) undergraduate core courses such as Engineering Graphics, Strength of Materials, Project Management, and (ii) graduate courses in the areas of Construction Engineering and Management. Capability of teaching Land Surveying and supervising capstone projects will be an asset. The department course lists can be found here. A demonstrated expertise in digital construction supported by a record of publications in scholarly journals would be an asset, as would demonstrated industry experience relevant to the position. Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is mandatory. 

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Construction Management/Engineering, or a closely related field by the appointment date and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of: 

  • demonstrated extensive teaching-related experience pertaining to construction engineering and management, 
  • demonstrated experience of teaching diverse subjects includes engineering graphics, strength of materials, and land surveying;
  • demonstrated capacity for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and suitability for teaching in the graduate program, as evidenced by 
    • a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, 
    • experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, 
    • examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, and 
    • other relevant achievements in teaching.
  • commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to teaching and service activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability to contribute to the life of the Department of Civil Engineering and the University through collegial service.

Note: Limited Term Faculty appointments at Toronto Metropolitan University may not exceed a combined total of four years. Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

Our Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs to about 1,000 students of diverse backgrounds. After completing the first-year common engineering courses and second-year common civil engineering courses, undergraduate students in the Civil Engineering program may continue in the regular Civil Engineering program or choose the Structural Engineering option. Students continuing in the Civil Engineering program will have the option of pursuing either the Environmental or Transportation Engineering Streams in the 4th year of the program. 

Our graduate programs (PhD, MASc and MEng) offer extensive courses and research opportunities in environmental, geomatics, structural, and transportation engineering. The Department also provides limited courses in the areas of specialization in geotechnical engineering, and construction and infrastructure management.
