Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2025, subject to final budgetary approval.
We are seeking applications from candidates who specialize in the study of social-ecological systems in the context of sustainable development. Potential areas of focus or application include, but are not limited to climate change, land cover change, food systems, human or political ecology, urban metabolism and resource systems, environmental health and justice, participatory science and sustainability indicators. The ideal candidate utilizes quantitative and qualitative methods and can teach core courses in the BA in Environment and Urban Sustainability.
The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will entail teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of students and/or curriculum development. The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative research program or creative activity that is externally funded and that produces cutting-edge, high quality results.
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Geography, Environmental Studies or Sciences, Human Ecology or a closely related field by the appointment date.
In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:
- strong emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
- demonstrated potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and suitability for teaching in the graduate program, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
- commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
- an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and the University through collegial service.

Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Arts
The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies has undergone significant growth and diversification in recent years, building on its long-standing reputation for spatial analysis and practical applications. The Department offers two undergraduate programs – BA Honours in Environment and Urban Sustainability, and Geographic Analysis – along with several Minors as well as liberal studies and elective courses to non-program students.
The Department offers one graduate program – Master of Spatial Analysis – and actively contributes through teaching, supervision and governance in several multidisciplinary graduate programs in the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the School of Public Policy and Democratic Innovation: The Environmental Applied Science and Management Program (MASc and PhD); Immigration and Settlement Studies (MA), and; Policy Studies (PhD).
