Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the New Media Department in The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1st 2026 subject to final budgetary approval. Applications from candidates who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) or people of marginalized genders (including women, trans, and non-binary people, amongst others) are particularly encouraged. 

New Media is seeking artists or scholars working at the intersection of creativity and theory in the areas of Future Imaginaries and Social Justice. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable record of interdisciplinary creative practice and scholarship.  Areas of investigation may include speculative design, identity, critical making, systems thinking, social justice and power, community building, sustainability, climate and/or alternative materials. We are open to all candidates who feel they address these areas. Preference in hiring will be given to BIPOC and people of marginalized genders.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity (SRC) and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will entail teaching at undergraduate and potentially graduate levels, supervision of students and curriculum development. The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative research program or creative activity that is externally funded and that produces cutting-edge, high quality results. 

In addition, the successful candidate must have the following:

 

  • Masters of Fine Arts or equivalent terminal degree in a field related to New Media art.
  • A record of successful and publicly recognised professional creative work or scholarship involving significant experience in Future Imaginaries and Social Justice. 
  • Proven capacity to synthesize and critically reflect on cultural and creative practices, issues, and trends in the field of New Media art.
  • A clear potential to produce current, innovative, and impactful scholarly, research and creative activity (SRC). Impact may be visible in research collaborations, exhibitions, creative work, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community-based or professional recognition or honours, grants or research-related awards that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence in the undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary curriculum, including the ability to teach studio and lecture courses;
  • A commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and 
  • A willingness and ability to contribute to the life of the New Media Department and the University through collegial service

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca]. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

New Media Department

The New Media Department offers a Bachelors of Fine Art degree where creativity meets technology. Our program lays a foundation for students to develop a critical understanding of making with emerging and existing technologies. Building on the idea that innovation begins in art, we prepare students to face the challenges of the 21st century by helping them develop into resilient, creative individuals that are both technologically literate but also capable of analytical and critical thinking.
